The biggest reforms in history to refugee laws have been announced in Britain. The Labour government has come forward with strict measures aimed at preventing illegal immigration. Under the new law, the protections for those granted refugee status will be cut. In addition, benefits for refugees who are able to work have been eliminated.

As part of these reforms, the duration of residence permits for those granted refugee status will be reduced from five years to two and a half years. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated that priority will be given to those who contribute to the country's economy. Under the more stringent decisions, a person granted refugee status will have to wait up to 20 years to apply for permanent residence instead of the current five years. The government stated that these measures are aimed at preventing those who enter the country illegally and ensuring justice and control. The government also intends to weaken the legal provisions that guaranteed accommodation and financial support to refugees. Officials said that illegal immigration is destroying the country and that those who break the law will not receive help.
